    History

In 1967, a $102 million bond issue was approved to build a two stadium complex. Construction began the following year (1968). Four years later construction was completed for the start of the 1972 National Football League season. The two stadium complex is known as the Truman Sports Complex with Arrowhead Stadium for football and Kauffman Stadium used for baseball. Arrowhead Stadium is often referred to as “Home of the Chiefs”. The original concept for the complex was to have the two stadiums use a common roof that would roll between the stadiums. The idea was scrapped as it was deemed too costly and difficult to build. The idea of a dome was again re visited in 1984 but it too was deemed unnecessary and impractical. Arrowhead Stadium was built with Astroturf as its playing surface. This was replaced in 1994 with natural grass. Many changes have occurred over the years. In 1991 two Diamond Vision screens were added. These screens were in a shape of a football at each endzone. In 2009 two high definition video displays were retrofitted to replace the older screens. In 1999 & 2000 all seats were replaced. In 2007 renovations plans were set in motion to bring the stadium up to par with the newer stadiums around the league. These renovations were completed in 2010.

    • The Kansas City Chiefs current success is adding to the electric atmosphere game day experience at Arrowhead Stadium. The iconic facility remains a great piece of classic 1970's stadium architecture. It's often easy for one to shake one's head dismissively when an old timer says, "They sure don't build 'em like that anymore," but in the case of Arrowhead, it's true. Recent renovations haven't tarnished the stadium's integrity, and it is undeniable that the additional concourse space makes attending games more pleasant. The tailgating experience is top-notch, where the surrounding parking lot is filled with families enjoying food and drink. I have to say, there's always a few fans who have enjoyed a one too may libations, but most fans police themselves and contribute to the overall positive Arrowhead Stadium experience. Make it a point and attend Arrowhead! Charles, Kansas City
