Memorial StadiumNebraska Cornhuskers

Stadium Dr. & T Street, Lincoln, NE, 68508
Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska is home to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's NCAA football team, the Cornhuskers. The stadium has a current seating capacity of 87,091 and has a FieldTurf playing surface. Memorial Stadium has been sold out for every game since 1962—an incredible streak of more than 300 games and counting. For as long as anyone can remember, the Huskers have touched a lucky horseshoe on their way from the locker room to the field. The horseshoe hangs above the door as Nebraska leaves the North Stadium. Because most fans wear red apparel, the stadium is referred to as the "Sea of Red" on game days.

    History

In the fall of 1922, a drive for $430,000 in funds to build a new football stadium was undertaken by faculty, students, alumni and friends of the university. Designed by John Latenser, Sr., a notable Omaha architect, the stadium was named Memorial Stadium to honor all Nebraskans who served in the Civil and Spanish-American Wars and World War I. Later, the stadium would also honor the Nebraskans who died in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. Construction was completed in just over 90 working days. Memorial Stadium was dedicated on October 20, 1923. While maintaining its traditional charm, Memorial Stadium has also become one of the most high-tech stadiums in the country. In 1994, the stadium featured big-screen instant replay boards. A statue of former coach Tom Osborne and former quarterback Brook Berringer can be found outside the north side of the stadium. Berringer was a quarterback on Nebraska's 1994 and 1995 national championship teams who died in a plane crash in April 1996. Still considered one of the “Cathedrals of College Football,” Memorial Stadium is one of the most intimidating locations to play in all of sports.
