O.co Coliseum, originally known as the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, is home to Major League Baseball’s Oakland Athletics and the National Football League’s Oakland Raiders. It is the only multi-purpose stadium remaining serving pro baseball and pro football. Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes used the stadium for home games from 2008-2009. The Coliseum features an underground design where the playing surface is below ground level, 21 feet below sea level. In addition, a hill was built around the perimeter of the stadium giving the Coliseum the illusion of being a single-level facility. The Coliseum is unique in that it has the most foul territory of any major league ballpark.

    History

In the 1960s, business leaders in Oakland sought to raise the city’s identity with the construction of a sports complex. Seeking to compete with their nearby neighbors in San Francisco, the city began plans for a stadium west of the Elmhurst district of East Oakland. Oakland was considered a prime candidate for a MLB franchise. Additionally, the American Football League’s Raiders were seeking an upgrade from Frank Youell Field. The Raiders played their first season at the Coliseum in 1966. The A’s would begin play at the park in 1968 after moving from Kansas City. The Oakland Invaders of the United States Football League played in the Coliseum from 1983 to 1985. In 1995, the Raiders returned to Oakland after moving to Los Angeles and playing in the L.A. Coliseum. The Oakland Coliseum underwent major renovations in 1996 with the addition of football seating that spans the outfield of the baseball configuration.
