Papa John's Cardinal StadiumLouisville Cardinals
1800 S. Floyd Street, Louisville, KY, 40209
A visit to Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky will show a shift horn hanging in the scoreboard of the north end zone of the stadium where the Cardinals have their home. It is sounded every time the Cardinals hit a goal and it recalls to mind the Rail Yard of South Louisville from which land was reclaimed to build the stadium in 1998. The stadium gets its unique name from Papa John’s Pizza which donated $5 million to get the naming rights and also after the “Old” Cardinal stadium in the Kentucky Exposition Center. Although the stadium opened with a big bang, the Cardinals lost the game to the Wildcats but won all the other football games played in the stadium in 1998. A renovation in 2008 brought the seating capacity from 42,000 to 55,000.
