Stanford Stadium is home to Sanford University's NCAA Football team, the Cardinals. The MLS San Jose Earthquakes also play some of their games here. The original Stanford Stadium opened in 1921 but it was torn down and replaced with a new stadium in 2006. The new stadium removed the track around the field and features a natural grass playing surface. Construction costs for the new stadium were $90 million compared to the mere $200,000 for the original stadium in 1921. The new Stanford Stadium has a seating capacity of 50,424. The stadium has been home to many large events in multiple venues. In 1985 Stanford Stadium hosted the Super Bowl and in 1999 it was home to the FIFA World Cup. The seating capacity was reduced and the new stadium includes an upper deck of seating. The new modifications ensured Stanford Stadium would be able to meet the current standards of playing fields.

    • Some friends and I found some great tickets for Stanford v. Army and spent the afternoon at the stadium. It has concessions, your usual, way overpriced stadium concessions, but Stanford's included Subway. Subway at a stadium? What!? Weird. Whatever. All the seats had backs to them, so that was a lovely perk. My friends and I parked a couple Caltrain stations away, took that in, and aside from a small wait, Caltrain was a painless process. Parking looked to be on dirt patches and painfully slow leaving and entering, so I'd recommend Caltrain to arrive. They add a stop for Stanford on football game days. Marissa M.
